Three other church groups from the United States were with us, each of us heading to different parts of the country to partner with local Slovak churches to reach the high school students in their cities for Christ! By the end of the summer, there will have been 13 camps across Slovakia. How exciting to be a part of this larger movement of God!
After the day of training, we traveled to Martinske Hole and joined the church team from Bratislava at our campsite. We ate dinner together and spent the evening in worship and prayer, preparing our hearts for the week ahead and asking for the Holy Spirit to move in the hearts of the students arriving the next day. It was such a beautiful thing to see people of different cultures and languages come together to worship the one, true God. This time together immediately took our two, separate teams and made us one body, serving together.
About half way through the camp, we started to see the students' protective walls come down as they opened up to talk about spiritual things. On the evening that the Gospel was shared, the students walked through a labyrinth of different stations to help them process what they just heard. At the end of it, they had an opportunity to talk and pray with one of the leaders. Many students asked for prayer that evening and took steps forward in their relationship with God.
However, the reality is that most of them were still not ready to fully follow Jesus. Slovaks take this decision very seriously, and it can take years before they are ready to commit their life to Him. One of our Slovak team members, Jany, shared that it took him three years of coming to KECY camp and his Slovak youth group before he was ready to follow Jesus. For Jany’s brother, it took seven years.
