My goal was to allow students to see healthy food options can taste good and this was seen through the students’ comments and reactions.
We're excited to share the stories of some of the teachers who received the Back To School Grants. Below is an account from Brandon Schirmer and how an interactive lesson impacted his students.
I would like to again thank ... all the Grace Life family for selecting me for this grant. I put the grant money to use last week and was a huge success in the message I was trying to provide all the students. Attached is a write up of what I did and some pictures as well. Thanks again!
Last week in PE, all 550 students were able to help make a smoothie. Each student played a role in putting different ingredients into a blender. After students completed adding all the required ingredients, we blended them all and made our smoothie. Then the students were able to enjoy their creations and taste their smoothie. I wanted to do this was to show students that there are other options out there beside sweet treats like ice cream or candies.
I also wanted to make sure the students had a hand on experience with making these smoothies to show them how easy is can be to make them at home. Overall, I wanted to allow students to taste a healthy snack and show them how to make this snack in order for these students to take this experience home with them to encourage their families to make them at home. My goal was to allow students to see healthy food options can taste good and this was seen through the students’ comments and reactions.
Thanks, Brandon, for sharing this experience with us and for the impact you make!
